COMMUNITY PROFILE: The City of
Medicine
Known as the City of Medicine, Durham is home to more than 300 medical and
health-related companies and medical practices with a combined payroll that
exceeds $1.5 billion annually and the renowned Duke University School of
Medicine. But its reputation as a leading medical center is not Durham’s only
claim to fame. Over the years, it has been named Best City for Women to Live and
Most Enlightened City. It is home to Research Triangle Park, one of the world’s
largest research and development centers, as well three of the top 40 golf
courses in the state. The state’s fourth largest city, Durham was also the
fastest growing major city in North Carolina in the 1990s and one of the most
ethnically diverse.
In addition to Duke University and North Carolina Central University, Durham is
also home to the North Carolina School of Science and Math, Durham Technical
Community College, the progressive Durham public schools and many private
schools.
Bull City residents are at no loss for
entertainment, shopping, culture and activities. Durham is home to Duke Blue
Devils basketball and Durham Bulls baseball, the Ninth Street Shopping District,
Brightleaf Square and the new Streets at Southpoint Mall as well as many
museums, art centers and restaurants. And, on average, Durham puts on a major
festival every four weeks. These range from the American Dance Festival to the
Bull Durham Blues Festival to the Native American Powwow to the Full Frame
Documentary Festival. |

From grammar school through higher education, Durham offers some of the finest
learning opportunities in the nation. At almost every level, Durham students
outperform their peers. Durham has one of the top 15 magnet schools in the
nation, the top unified system in North Carolina for percentage taking the SAT,
the first residential high school for science and math. Durham students
routinely outscore peers in North Carolina and the nation on the SAT.

ATTRACTIONS
The
American Tobacco Trail is a 23+ mile rails-to-trails project. The route
crosses through the City of Durham and Durham County.
Durham Bulls baseball
has been delighting fans since 1902. Durham won its second consecutive
International League Championship in 2003, becoming the only team in the
119-year history of the International League to sweep back-to-back Governors’
Cup Finals.
Ninth Street Shopping District,
located near Duke's East Campus and Ninth Street, Old West Durham is one of the
oldest neighborhoods in the Bull City. Previously known as Pin Hook, the area
was settled before Durham itself.
Duke Homestead and
Tobacco Museum is a beautiful 19th century estate, home to extensive
archives and exhibits about early tobacco farming in America, its popularization
and manufacture. The Homestead maintains the original buildings used by the Duke
family as well as a modern museum with interactive, mutimedia exhibits and
animitronic displays.
The Museum of Life and
Science is recognized internationally for its facilities and educational
programs. It’s a place where kids and adults alike can walk through a rainforest
or a butterfly house and view more than 100 live animal species.
